Is That Summer Diarrhea Just a Stomach Bug, or Could It Be Cyclospora?

Is That Summer Diarrhea Just a Stomach Bug, or Could It Be Cyclospora?

2026-07-20

Imagine enjoying fresh berries and a pool dip, only to find yourself days later battling relentless watery diarrhea that won't quit. What starts as mild cramping can escalate into exhausting episodes lasting weeks. This might not be a typical 24-hour virus, it could be cyclosporiasis, caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Its hallmark - profuse, watery diarrhea can lead to severe dehydration, bloating, and fatigue. Some patients experience a relapsing pattern, where symptoms improve only to return, making recovery particularly draining.

This summer, the parasite has hit hard across the US, with Michigan reporting over 1,500 cases and Ohio nearly 200. New York, Illinois, and Texas have also seen spikes. The true scale may be underreported since standard stool tests often miss cyclospora, requiring special orders. Over 70 people have been hospitalized due to severe dehydration, underscoring the seriousness of this easily mistaken infection.

Infection primarily comes from contaminated fresh produce or water. Past outbreaks have been traced to raspberries, basil, salad mixes, and cilantro, as well as recreational water like lakes and chlorinated pools. To prevent infection, the most reliable method is cooking produce to 158°F, which kills the parasite. For raw items like salad greens, soak them in water for at least a minute with gentle swishing, or use a vinegar-and-water rinse (1:3 ratio) - though these reduce risk rather than eliminate it completely. Vulnerable individuals should avoid high-risk foods during outbreaks.

If diarrhea persists beyond 48 hours, seek medical advice promptly. Since cyclospora isn't detected by routine stool tests, doctors may need to order specific parasitic examinations. Rapid diagnostic options available in many clinics can quickly distinguish cyclospora from other infections, enabling timely care and preventing prolonged suffering. While summer brings joy and outdoor fun, staying informed and practicing careful food hygiene - especially cooking produce thoroughly and washing raw items diligently - can keep this hidden threat at bay, ensuring your season remains one of health and relaxation.
